Edwin "Young, Pretty & Ruthless" Louis - Muay-Thai, BJJ & MMA
Edwin Jerome Louis II was born in San Diego, CA on October 23, 1983. Raised by his mother Julie and his father Edwin Sr., Edwin was taught many valuable lessons early on. His father, a Chief in the U.S. Navy, taught Edwin early on about hard work, respect, dedication, diligence and perseverance. His mother, a full time wife/mom taught him early about responsibility, organization, sensitivity and order. The eldest of 3 children, Edwin took on a leadership role at an early age, aiming to set a good example for his younger siblings. Edwin’s younger brother Andrew (22) is an MMA fighter who trains out of the Throwdown Elite Training Center in San Diego, CA under Pride/ UFC veteran Dean Lister. Edwin’s younger sister Samantha (20) is a full time student and a jazz/hip-hop dance performer/choreographer.
Edwin took a liking to Martial Arts at a very young age. His father, an American Kenpo black belt under Tony Pablo, competed for numerous years. Ranked as one of the top west coast competitors, Edwin Sr. competed up and down the California coast taking home more than 20 1st place titles and at one time was ranked at #14 in the nation. Edwin always took an interest in whatever his father was doing, Martial Arts was no different. As a toddler, Edwin was throwing kicks as soon as he could walk, and as he got a bit older his dad started taking him down to the studio where he watched his dad train and spar in preparation for his competitions. At the age of 6 & 4, Edwin & Andrew started their Martial Arts training under the tutelage of their father. Learning first and foremost that Martial Arts is first about respect, humility and self control.
Once in high school, Edwin stepped away from Martial Arts to compete in team sports where he participated in basketball and track for Castle Park High School in Chula Vista, CA. Edwin graduated in 2001 and later moved to Tucson, AZ where he would eventually pick back up on his Martial Arts training.
In 2006 Edwin decided to pursuit MMA and began training with local boxing coach Brad Carlton. Brad was Edwin’s first ever boxing coach and helped him develop his boxing skills from the ground up. Starting at square #1, Brad helped Edwin break down and refine his boxing technique and skills. Brad laid the ground work, and they still maintain a close relationship working side by side today. Soon after training with Carlton, Edwin began his training in muay-thai kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Brandon Roberts. Brandon, a student of Tucson legend Nike Knight and purple belt in BJJ pushed Edwin to be a well rounded fighter with strengths both standing and on the ground.
In 2007 during a training session, Edwin suffered a devastating injury which sidelined him for 11 months. Being unable to train or exercise he decided to devote his new free time to studying the styles of different fighters. He took any fight films he could get his hands on and spent hours upon hours every day studying fighters styles and learning new combinations, faints, setups, submissions, etc.
In 2008 Edwin returned to training and was offered a position as an instructor at a local gym where he taught Boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA. He instantly fell in love with teaching and put as much effort and passion into his students as his coaches had put into him. In April of 2008 Edwin begain training with Nike Knight. Nike, a native of Thailand with over 200 fights and multiple world championships to his credit, immediately took Edwin under his wing and pushed him to the limit in every aspect of training. Nike helped Edwin further develop his striking & wrestling skills, as well as push his endurance to an all new high. Edwin has competed a number of times in both Muay Thai & MMA matches and brings a wealth of knowledge & skill to his teaching.
In 2009 Edwin made the move to Neutral Corner Gym where he trains full time. He is a part of the MMA fight team and also works as an instructor teaching Muay Thai, BJJ and MMA. Edwin loves the sport of mixed martial arts and plans to train, compete and teach for a very long time. He feels that the very values that his parents taught him at a young age have allowed him to be successful in the things that he does today. As for fighting, Edwin feels very privileged to be able to follow in his fathers foot steps as a competitor saying that fighting "runs in the bloodline". Edwin has had the opportunity to train with other well known fighters such as Dominic Cruz, Dave Harris, Nick Diaz, Nathan Diaz, Forrest Griffin, Junie Browning, Gilbert Melendez, Jake Shields, Drew Mora, Tito Ortiz, Dan Henderson, Ed West, Amos Sotelo, Neil Saunders and Chad Dietmeyer.
